Miler Madeline D. '11 Competes on National Track

On January 28, Madeline D. '11 became the first from McDonogh to run in the prestigious 104th annnual Millrose Games. Seeded 10th in the girls mile race, she finished in ninth place in the national competition, which was televised live on ESPN2 from Madison Square Garden.

Said Madeline after the race, “It was really something else to be part of something that’s been going on for more than a century.”

Before the season, coaches Jeff Sanborn and Tristram Thomas ’05 asked Madeline what awesome things she wanted to accomplish. Millrose made the list, and Madeline made it to Millrose with the 4:56 time she ran in a mid-January qualifier.

As the tenth seed, she felt comfortable running in the outermost lane in Madison Square Garden. She was surprised to be assigned to lane 1 instead. “Inside you have to go out quickly or else you get boxed in. I was in the first lane. That was a little scary. I tried to take it in stride and use the extra adrenaline.”

She also told herself, “This meet is the reward for working hard, so I should enjoy this.”

Sure enough, the other competitors moved over to lane 1. Madeline ran her race in lane 2, which meant every lap she ran was 7 meters longer than if she had run in lane 1. She finished in ninth place with a time just over 5 minutes. “If I had just run in lane 1, I could have run a 4:54 to place fourth or fifth,” she said.

添加了玛德琳, “It was a privilege and and honor to run in the same meet with some of the best in the world, Olympians and professionals.” Plus, she enjoyed unexpected camaraderie with the other girls in her race. “[They] came up to me and kind of scooped me up and said, ‘Don’t beat yourself up over this.’ You plop yourself down in that group and you feel like you have been friends for years.”

What I take away from [this experience] is that if you really work hard for something, you’ll get it. I really, really wanted this, and it gave me a perspective of how much racing is a mental battle.”

Next up for Madeline is the IAAM team championship this Friday. And then on to the indoor championships in March at the New York Armory, where she qualified for Millrose. Madeline is especially excited for that one because she’ll reunite with her competitors from Millrose. “When I got home I had six Facebook friend requests from them. That was really something!”
